"It's believed that in order to pull off the perfect crime, everything must be exact. Planed so precise that every scenario has all ready been thought of. This just is not true. Chaotic, random, sporadic…These are the methods used in the perfect crime…" [Sic throughout]
The preceding is part of an entry posted on a MySpace.com blog allegedly belonging to 18-year-old Josh Spearman. Spearman is a freshman at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville being held at the Walton County Jail. He is charged with two counts of murder for his alleged role in the deaths of his parents, 55-year-old Darryl Spearman and 52-year-old Cherri Spearman.
The victims' bodies were found on February 1, 2007 at approximately 8:30 a.m. in the living room of their Memory Lane home. According to Bruce Wright, chief deputy of the Walton County Sheriff's Department, Mr. and Mrs. Spearman died as a result of blunt force trauma. The murders are believed to have taken place within 12 hours of the discovery of the bodies by Mrs. Spearman's brother.
According toWaltontribune.com, police first suspected Spearman after he was "elusive" with investigators and declined to answer their questions, stating that he already had a lawyer on retainer. His impending arrest came after investigators allegedly discovered evidence at the scene connecting Spearman to the murders. Police have released few details on the murders and have yet to comment on a possible motive.
In the wake of the murders, both friends and family members are having a difficult time understanding why Spearman would have killed his parents, who adopted him from Romania.
Daryl's niece, Deborah Woolley, told AJC.com "This has been truly devastating." She added, "It's just a horrible thing…We embraced Josh into the family. We're so conflicted and feel so much hurt as a family. We loved Josh. We still love him. We really don't know what to think."
Someone last logged into Spearman's alleged MySpace.com profile on the day his parents' bodies were discovered. According to the profile, he is a 2007 graduate of Faith Academy in Loganville, Georgia and works as an instructor for the American Martial Arts Institute of Atlanta. The "About Me" section of the profile reads:
"Things aren't always what they look like. Today is the tomorrow you were waiting for yesterday. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Plan your work and work your plan. Happiness is the way! Succes is a journey, not a destination. Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off the road. There is always an opportunity in any disaster. The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. The only tyrant I accept in this world is the still voice within. We must be the change we wish to see." [Sic throughout]
There is nothing that overtly links Spearman to the murders on the profile; however, the associated blog does contain some uniquely insightful entries. Part of a May 6, 2007 entry reads:
"If I had to choose three of the most important (influential) people in the world, I would have to say, Hitler…and my parents. All of these people have dramatically influenced the world in a special way. Either for good or for bad, each of these people have given more to society as a whole than anyone else has. Let's start with the most important to me, my parents.
"Without my parents, I would not exist. I wouldn't know the joy of living. The ability to give life is an amazing gift and without that gift, no one would be able to do anything because none of us would be here. My parents have taught me so much that without their teachings, I wouldn't be able to function. They taught me how to speak, how to tie my shoes...everything. All the basics of human life, and I think that counts for something. Okay, it counts for a whole lot of something.
"Next would be Hitler. Although he did some pretty messed up stuff, his motives were noble. In his mind, he was trying to help his country and rebuild the greatness that Germany once had. Also, without the cruel experiments the Nazis performed, we wouldn't have many of the scientific breakthroughs (like the great improvement on curing aids and things like that) we have today. Also without them, we wouldn't even have a space program. So Hitler has done some messed up stuff yes, but without him, we wouldn't have some of the great advances we do today." [Sic throughout]
Other entries include fictional stories about school shootings and mariticide. Part of one dated February 19, 2007 reads:
"When the police arrived at the house, they came in to find my wife laying on the floor, cold and lifeless at my feet. The phone still in my hand from when I had called them. I told them she had fallen down the stairs, and no further questions were asked. They said I had been through enough today and that I needed to get away from this house for a little while. One of the officers had suspected foul play, but then again, they all do. They later brought me in for questioning, but they had nothing to convict me or even to hold me overnight. They apologized for detaining me and told some crap about how they were just going by the book. I told them that it was no problem and that they were just doing they're jobs, and then, I just walked away." [Sic throughout]
The most recent entry to the blog was posted on January 20, 2008. It remains unclear if it has any relevance to this case.
"There was a time when I would have given anything to have a sertin girl in my life. I loved her with all my heart, but we just didn't work out. I would have sold my soul to have her back, but now I see that life moves on. She has and so must I. I do not want her sympathy or remorse. I do not want her undying love and infatuation. All I want is to be done with her memory and to be done with the love I have for her. It's time for a new begining [sic]. Goodbye." [Sic throughout]
Perhaps in the coming weeks, we will learn more details about this case, including the motive behind what drove Spearman to allegedly murder his parents.
