Top 5 Lessons Learned in the Life of a Detective![]() From accidental murders to serial killings, there is no shortage of cases for homicide detectives. Their lives are constantly filled with gathering evidence, solving cases, and, hopefully, arresting those responsible. Detectives are devoted experts in their field; but that doesn't mean it's all a cake walk. Emotions run high, relationships are tested, and difficulties arise, but the strong detectives persevere and make it through. Here are some of the top lessons learned, straight from the mouths of real detectives, an insider's look at their lives and what they do. 1. Dealing with Death Isn't Always Business as Usual After the death of her sister — from an almost 2 year battle with breast cancer — Detective Christine Mannina of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department faced the toughest obstacle in her career yet: moving on from tragedy. Dealing with murder cases every day, Mannina and many others in her field enjoy solving the crime, catching the bad guy, and bringing peace to the victim's family. However, they quickly find that dealing with death is far different when it's the one you love. "I have solved most of my cases because I investigate it until there is nothing more," said Mannina. "This case will remain open for the remainder of my life. I don't and can't understand why this happened, and I know I won't be able to solve it." No matter how many cases they solve, or how many murders they come across, in the end, detectives face the same emotions as anyone else. |
