No. 5 - John Gotti![]() Known as the "Dapper Don" for his stylish appearance and as the "Teflon Don" for his ability to let criminal charges slide right off him, John Gotti is America's most famous modern outlaw. As the head of the Gambino family, Gotti and his men battled other crime families for control of New York City and its suburbs throughout the 1970s and 1980s. For years Gotti was able to elude law enforcement, but he was finally brought down when police caught him on tape discussing various crimes, including murder. He was convicted on multiple counts ranging from murder to tax evasion and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He died of cancer in prison in 2002 at the age of 61.
