University of Iowa graduate student Gang Lu's anger over his doctoral dissertation not winning an academic award appears to be the motivation for his targeted killings. On Nov. 1, 1991, Lu shot three professors, a rival student (who won a dissertation award), a student employee, the vice president of student affairs and then himself. Only the student employee survived but is a quadriplegic from the injuries sustained.
