No. 1 - Massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympics Games

    print

Munich 1972

In 1972, the world watched with anticipation as Germany hosted the Olympics for the first time since the fall of the Nazi regime. Called the "Games of Peace and Joy," the event soon took a gruesome turn when on Sept. 5 — 10 days into the games — eight masked Palestinian terrorists stormed the apartment of Jewish athletes, killing two and taking nine as hostages. Within 24 hours, all nine were dead.

The magnitude of the terrorist crimes dwarfed the athletic achievement of the Munich Olympic Games, which included Mark Spitz' winning seven gold medals and breaking seven world records. Far from a symbol of peace and joy, the Munich games would henceforth be known as "Black September."
