Member of the "Manson Family."  Van Houten participated in and was charged with the murders of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca that took place on Aug. 10, 1969.  Van Houten met Charles Manson through Bobby Beausoleil in 1968, having heard that Manson was "like Jesus Christ and had the answers."  During the criminal trial, Van Houten received little sympathy from the jury, as she continuously giggled throughout testimony and aligned herself with Manson.  She was sentenced to death, and the sentence was later commuted to life in prison.  Van Houten won a retrial after her attorney disappeared and was found dead in the middle of the first trial.  The second trial resulted in a hung jury, and a third trial found her guilty and again sentenced her to life in prison.  She has been denied parole 18 times.
