Paul WatkinsRelated LinksMember of the "Manson Family." For approximately two years, Watkins moved in and out of the "Family," vacillating between a close connection with Manson and the other members and a hesitancy about the foreboding nature of Manson’s "Helter Skelter" prophecy. Months after the Tate-LaBianca murders, Watkins split off from the remaining "Family" members (who had not been arrested) and provided preliminary information to police about Manson and the murders. That same month, Watkins was badly burned by a fire in his car that he believed was caused by a candle or marijuana cigarette. The "Family" would later claim to have caused the fire, but this was never proved. In October 1970, Watkins testified in the Tate-LaBianca murder trial and provided key evidence about the nature of Manson’s belief in "Helter Skelter" and the ensuing race wars. He died in 1990 of leukemia. |
