6. Atlanta Federal Penitentiary

Location: Atlanta, Ga.

Ambiance: This high-security prison for men opened in 1902 and was the site of an 11-day riot when Cuban refugees from the Mariel Boatlift were tired of being detained.

Famous Guests: Past inmates include mob boss John Gotti and Carlo Ponzi, mastermind behind the infamous "Ponzi Scheme."

Activities: There are GED programs, apprenticeship programs (for plumbing, cooking and electrical work), a well-stocked library and recreational activities.

Staff: There are about 2,000 prisoners and 600 staffers at AFP.
