Notorious Prisons

7. Attica Correctional Facility

Location: Attica, N.Y. The prison is located about halfway between the cities of Buffalo and Rochester.

Ambiance: Built in the 1930s, Attica is a maximum-security prison. Prisoners with discipline issues are often sent from other facilities to Attica, where they can be better contained. Attica was the site of a prison riot in 1971, in which 29 inmates and 10 correctional officers perished.

Famous Guests: Serial killer David "Son of Sam" Berkowitz used to reside here (he's now at Sullivan Correctional Facility), and it's the current residence of John Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman.

Activities: Educational, vocational and work programs keep prisoners busy. They can also have small televisions in their cells, or visit the library for entertainment.

Staff: There are about 800 workers and more than 2,000 inmates.
