Ambiance: Built in the late 1800s, Leavenworth may have introduced the prison euphemism "the hot house" into our lexicon. The building was notoriously warm, no matter what time of year or what cooling systems were operating. Today Leavenworth is transitioning from high to medium security.
Famous Guests: Serial killer Carl Panzram was executed by hanging at Leavenworth. NFL star and dog-fighter Michael Vick stayed here as part of his incarceration, and it was the initial prison home of convicted drug dealer and former race car driver Randy Lanier.
Activities: Leavenworth offers educational programs and GED preparation, vocational training (including barber college), and intramural sports such as basketball, flag football, softball and racquetball.
Staff: Leavenworth has around 1,700 prisoners and a staff of about 500.
