False Confessions: Black Dahlia

The Black Dahlia

The Black Dahlia

Notoriety is said to be the reason upwards of 60 people confessed to the still-unsolved murder of the Black Dahlia.

On Jan. 15, 1947, aspiring young actress Elizabeth Short was found dead in Los Angeles. Her body had been severely mutilated, and shortly after the discovery the press nicknamed her "Black Dahlia," after a current movie called "The Blue Dahlia." This nickname given to her by the media — she was never called this name when she was alive. The person or persons responsible for killing Short have never been found, even though between 30 and 60 men and women are believed to have confessed to killing her. Much like the Lindbergh baby and John Mark Karr cases, investigators believe most of the confessions were mere attempts for notoriety. None of the confessions led investigators to clues in helping to resolve the case. It remains unsolved.
